Perhaps in a move to differentiate itself from Microsoft's new Slate PC category, Apple iPad might become the marketing name of Apple's upcoming tablet, not Apple iSlate as originally believed.
iSlate or iPad? According to MacRumors, Apple has filed iPad in the Canadian trademark database under the categories of handheld mobile digital electronic devices with a broad range of applications. The blog points out that while the original iSlate trademarks dates back to 2006-2007, iPad was filed in July 2009.
Very similar trademarks were also filed in Europe and Hong Kong in July. Furthermore, iPad trademark applications have showed up in New Zealand and Australia this month.
Despite iPad currently being trademarked by Fujitsu in the U.S., MacRumors believes that Apple iPad will be the name of Apple's new tablet (as Cisco's iPhone trademark at one point didn't stop Apple from using it). In another report from yesterday, Boy Genius Report had received intel that suggested it would be marketed as the Apple iTablet. In other words, there are now three potential names out there, and we guess Apple iPad or Apple iTablet would cling as well.
During the CES 2010 keynote earlier this month, Microsoft's Steve Ballmer introduced the company's new Slate PC category, and perhaps Apple suddenly felt the need to differentiate itself from upcoming Slate PCs. According to leaks, it doesn't look like Slate PCs and Apple's upcoming iSlate / iTablet / iPad will have a whole lot in common.
