Following last year's announcement of Moblin 2.1, Intel recently showcased what could be the future in smartphones: the LG GW990.
For those who remember the PDA age, Intel used to be a big player in the mobility market. However, as cell phones and PDAs rapidly became one, Intel's hardware solutions simply couldn't keep up to speed. As part of a new effort to succeed in the smartphone market, the LG GW990 was featured in Paul Otellini's Intel CES keynote yesterday.
The new LG smartphone pairs the Linux-based Moblin 2.1 OS with the Intel Moorestown platform. The LG GW990 sports a 4.8-inch full touchscreen display with a resolution of 1024 by 480 pixels and provides a full screen to display web content without the need for scrolling.
The user experience on devices such as the LG GW990 will continue to improve as faster broadband speeds emerge with 4G deployments. While the version that was demonstrated in the keynote was based on HSPA, LG indicated that the GW990 is extensible to support LTE networks and the company has plans to add this functionality in the future.
The LG GW990 is expected to come to market in the second half of 2010.
Engadget has a nice hands-on gallery of the LG GW990 here, and we have to say that the blog seems to have gotten a pretty nice gallery layout recently as well.
