Microsoft's Alchemy Ventures tablet, likely to boast Silverlight technology, may get its first appearance at CES today.
New York Times today reported that Microsoft's Steve Ballmer will unveil a slate-type computer during his keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The computer will be made by HP and is said to be a "multimedia whiz with e-reader and multi-touch functions".
If you're a hardcore Microsoft fan you've probably already heard slightly about the project behind this new product, codenamed Alchemy Ventures. The project is headed by J Allard, Microsoft's Chief Experience Officer and Chief Technology Officer. According to Mary Jo Foley, members of the Surface team are also involved with the project.
According to TechFlash, the Alchemy Ventures tablet will be showcased in a video during Steve Ballmer's keynote later today, while New York Times' sources say a final release may hit store shelves by mid-2010.
Official details of the Alchemy Ventures tablet have pretty much been non-existing to date, meaning that whatever Microsoft plans to reveal today will likely give us all a better clue of Microsoft's efforts in reaching consumers with tablet computers. Like Windows Mobile smartphones, Microsoft's tablet offerings have tended to be as corporate-minded as possible to date.
With Microsoft seriously moving into consumer territory in 2010 and beyond, it'll obviously be interesting to see exactly what kind of product types the company will place its bet on. Late last year, Microsoft for instance announced a Silverlight partnership with Intel, with the aim of integrating the new cross-platform technology in Intel's Moblin platform.
If we should make a guess, we'd say the chances of seeing the Alchemy Ventures tablet boasting a Silverlight solution on top of Windows 7 are pretty high tonight.
