Samsung has announced a new camera concept in the Samsung NX10. The new camera features an interchangeable lens design, so you can swap out focal lengths and various styles like you would on a real DSLR. But the large, APS-C sized CMOS sensor fits into a more compact body, shedding size and weight compared to the larger competition. To keep the body small, Samsung has removed the standard mirror from the SLR design, so you won't have a real through the lens optical viewfinder. You'll control the camera only with the screen around back.
Because you'll be relying so heavily on the screen to take high-quality shots, Samsung has spared no expense. The company dominates the consumer electronics market at the moment in their use of AMOLED technology, a higher contrast, lower power alternative to a standard LCD. The Samsung NX10 gets a 3-inch AMOLED screen around back. The screen is even smart enough to know when you're looking through the fixed viewfinder and shut off the display.
Samsung is bragging about the new NX10's auto focus capabilities, calling the auto focus one of the fastest AF in its class on the market. Clearly Samsung is trying to differentiate from Panasonic and Olympus, who both sell Micro Four Thirds cameras, like the Panasonic DMC-G1. Micro Four Thirds also uses a mirrorless system with interchangeable lenses, and these cameras are usually built compact like the Samsung NX10.
Like the newest Micro Four Thirds cameras, the Samsung NX10 also features a video recording mode. The camera can record high definition videos at 720p resolution. Videos are recorded using the H.264 codec. To play your high def movies on a larger screen, the Samsung NX10 also features an HDMI output.
The camera has a nice range of standard features, and Samsung also claims the device will have a deep manual mode to tweak your settings as you like them. For amateurs, the Samsung NX10 will feature a Smart Auto mode and a Smart Range mode, which will enhance photos for a higher dynamic range. To keep the sensor clean while you change lenses, the Samsung NX10 will feature Supersonic Dust Reduction. This uses sound waves to shake dust particles off the APS-C sensor.
Pricing and specific availability have yet to be announced, but we expect this camera will hit the market some time during the Spring quarter of this year.
