Yet another hands-on report on the Google Nexus One has appeared, and this time around it's a pretty informative hands-on look. Should Sony Ericsson sleep well at night?
Earlier this year we predicted that Sony Ericsson would become the company that would give Android credibility as a multimedia platform. However, recently the Google Nexus One leaked out, a phone that was rumored to knock out everything else on the market. A new hands-on report by tnkgrl reveals that the Google Nexus One will at least not be a multimedia-wonder from another planet. Based on that report, which seems very credible, the Google Nexus One seems to be a pretty straightforward HTC all-touch phone powered by Android 2.1.
According to tnkgrl, the Google Nexus One lacks a dedicated camera button and the flash is weak. It'll also use the same camera interface as the Motorola Droid, meaning that Android 2.1 will not improve upon Android 2.0 as far as camera software is concerned. In other words, Google will continue to provide the basics and leave it up to companies like Sony Ericsson to add top-notch camera features and create their own camera application that provides the full spectra of advanced imaging options. This basically means that Google is not looking to compete with OHA members in areas where they are supreme, but rather wants to improve the Android experience out-of-box slightly.
We recommend checking out tnkgrl's hands-on report here, and while you do, we preliminary conclude that Sony Ericsson should sleep well at night. They are still on top of our list as far as making Android a credible multimedia platform when it comes to aspects like camera performance and multimedia playback integration. Let's just hope they get all the other stuff that matters for the time being right as well when releasing the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 next year, like social networking and a great messaging experience for an all-touch phone. That would give the Xperia lineup an addition worth waiting for in several ways.
