First GPRS payment conductedBy Jørgen Sundgot, Friday 19 January 2001
Payment from mobile devices is all the rage nowadays, and this week More Magic Software and Sonera demonstrated the very first payment of goods using a GPRS mobile phone on Sonera's GPRS network.

So many device manufacturers, content providers and software manufacturers are getting into m-commerce these days, that it's beginning to get difficult to keep up with them all. Add to the mixture a blend of diverse terms and expressions, and the confusion becomes complete - just look at this: mobile e-commerce, m-commerce, me-commerce, mobile transactions, m-conomy.

Ill: Sonera
Even though it's a bit confusing to navigate through the jungle of expressions, the purpose is all the same: To conduct secure payments in a user-friendly manner from mobile devices. Since January 1st, a slew of large manufacturers have announced that they are conducting mobile payment trials, but none of them have involved the use of GPRS.

As it seems, More Magic Software's (MMS) solution is the first one to successfully conduct a trial transaction over a GPRS network, namely the GPRS network of Finnish Sonera. The trial was based on MMS' MBroker software, which previously has given customers the ability to conduct payments over GSM networks.

In the future, MMS' software will also support UMTS or 3G platforms, so that you'll be able to conduct purchases on your new communicator - that is, if you can afford anything else after having bought it.
