Android smartphones with serious gaming technology have barely hit store shelves, but Gameloft says it's cutting back on its Android investment.
According to Reuters, Gameloft is now cutting back investment in developing games and other applications for Google's Android platform. Gameloft's finance director, Alexandre de Rochefort, said the company has cut back on investment mostly due to weaknesses of Android's application store and lack of sales. "We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android", Rochefort said.
It's an interesting move, yet when looking at the iPhone and iPod touch sales numbers it's understandable that Android's Marketplace can't compete with Apple's App Store. According to Gameloft, games for iPhone generated 13 percent of the company's revenue in the last quarter.
On the other hand, this is obviously good news for Apple, which has been getting a lot of heat lately. That said, with the current explosion of Android handsets offered by carriers, and with 3D graphics acceleration in devices like the Motorola Droid being rolled out now, it's just a matter of time before a significant amount of Android users are ready for serious gaming.
