Editor's note: A new Samsung statement says that the company has not abandoned Symbian.
Digitimes reports that Samsung's Senior Vice President, Don Joo Lee, says that Samsung will no longer use Symbian OS in its smartphones. Although Symbian is currently moving further into mass market territory, the company feels that their own upcoming platform, Samsung bada, will be a better fit to the armada of popular mass market touchscreen phones in their portfolio.
With improved Windows Mobile and Android platforms, the need for Symbian in high-end smartphones like the Samsung Omnia HD might also no longer exist. After all, even Nokia is currently moving away from Symbian when it comes to high-end smartphones, and will place its bet on Maemo 6 for that kind of smartphones in the years ahead.
Samsung's Don Joo Lee also noted that Samsung will continue to strengthen its deployment in HD displays, high performance CPUs and LTE technology for handsets. That's also good news for Apple fans, as Samsung is normally involved in developing key hardware aspects of Apple's portable and mobile products.
