Sony Ericsson today unveiled the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, the first phone in a family of phones to deliver a consistent user experience built on the manufacturer's entertainment heritage. Combining rich graphics with advanced capabilities, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 introduces a new UX platform that will evolve across the product portfolio and expand over time continuously introducing new features and capabilities.
The UX platform builds on top of Android 1.6 and creates a unique Sony Ericsson user experience by combining best-in-class entertainment features with signature applications, integration of social media service and a rich graphical user interface.
Sony Ericsson Timescape, the first signature application, manages all your communication with one person in one place. Browse through your conversations to check out your Facebook, Twitter, photos, e-mails and texts all in one go.
Sony Ericsson Mediascape, the second signature application, aims to be a smart way to get all the music, photos and videos you want from your favorite friends and artists. It accesses content from everywhere - your phone, YouTube, PlayNow and presents everything for you.
Both Mediascape and Timescape use intelligence capabilities to for instance automatically recognize connections between contacts, content and media. Pressing the new "infinite" button will guide you through the connected world, aggregating all your interactions with one person into one view. Intelligent face recognition features recognize up to five faces in any picture, automatically connecting them with your social phonebook and all other related communications with that person.
It's worth highlighting that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 also incorporates Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (the full package). By utilizing Android, users of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 can also download third-party applications from both PlayNow and Android Market.
Key specifications of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 include a 4-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels as well as a 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, face recognition, smile detection, touch focus and video recording. The smartphone will also ship with a 8GB microSD memory card and a micro USB cable for charging, synchronization and file transfer.
When it comes to connectivity, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 offers a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth, USB as well as Wi-Fi 802.11b/g connectivity. A pre-loaded application, Sony Ericsson Sync, aims to make it easier for users to manage synchronization of content.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will offer a range of Google Apps, including Google Calendar, Google Maps with Street View, Google Media Uploader, Google phone-top search, Google search widget, Google Talk, Google Voice Search as well as YouTube. Interestingly, there's also a new GPS service on-board: Wisepilot turn-by-turn navigation by Swedish Appello Systems AB.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will be powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 processor. As far as cellular network support is concerned, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will ship in two versions: Quad-band GSM + HSPA 900/1700/2100 (T-Mobile USA + Europe) or Quad-band GSM + HSPA 800/850/1900/2100 (AT&T Wireless + Europe). The phone weighs in at 135 grams and measures 119 by 63 by 13 mm.
While the announcement today says that the phone is powered by Android 1.6, there's a possibility that the final version will be powered by Android 2.0. This would for instance provide an improved Android browser with HTML5 support and improved 3D graphics acceleration. That said, there's no doubt that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and its UX platform goes way beyond Android 2.0 when it comes to many other multimedia-centric aspects.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will be available in selected markets in February 2010.
