Motorola today announced the Motorola Milestone, Europe's first smartphone powered by Android 2.0. You might have already heard of the Milestone as it's basically the GSM version of a certain Android 2.0 phone for Verizon Wireless.
Key specifications include a slide-out QWERTY thumbboard, 3.7-inch widescreen display with a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels, touchscreen with pinch-and-zoom function and double tap, 5-megapixel camera with Dual LED flash as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Motorola Milestone boasts a range of Google Apps, including Google Maps with Latitude, Google Talk, Google Mail and YouTube. The smartphone also incorporates native support for Microsoft Exchange.
When it comes to GPS navigation, the Motorola Milestone will offer MOTONAV turn-by-turn navigation, Google Maps and E-Compass Latitude. Courtesy of Android 2.0, there's also an improved Android mobile browser with HTML5 support in the Motorola Milestone. An 8GB microSD memory card will be bundled in the package, while the incorporated memory slot supports up to 32GB memory cards.
Motorola also emphasizes the fact that the Motorola Milestone is powered by a fast OMAP3430 chipset boasting a 600 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor like the iPhone 3GS and Nokia N900. Firmware upgrades will be provided over-the-air via either the Motorola Milestone's Wi-Fi or 3G connection.
The Motorola Milestone weighs in at 165 grams and measures 115,8 by 60 by 13,7 mm. A 1400 mAh battery promises up to 5 hours of talk time. The smartphone operates on Quad-band GSM networks and 900/2100 MHz 3G networks. When it comes to data speeds, the Motorola Milestone supports 10.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA.
The Motorola Milestone will be available through O2 and Vodafone in Germany initially, and will eventually also be sold in Italy. Availability of the Motorola Milestone for other markets will be announced later.
