HTC earlier this fall said that a device similar to the HTC HD2 could be released with Android 2.0. Back then, what were the chances of seeing such a phone in Verizon Wireless stores? In the last few weeks, however, Verizon Wireless has all of a sudden become the leader in driving the Android buzz forward.
As such, it now seems like there's a good chance that we'll see a version of the HTC HD2 powered by Android 2.0 being announced by HTC and Verizon Wireless at some point. An image of the device, which is codenamed HTC Passion, has already been posted to a blog called TheUnlockr, and the blog says that it could be picked up by Verizon Wireless.
The HTC Passion is also rumored to be powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, like the HTC HD2. It would then join the ranks of other Android phones like the Sony Ericsson Rachael and Acer Liquid as far as processor type is concerned. There's also a good reason to believe that the HTC Passion will offer Sense UI coupled with a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen with a WVGA resolution, just like the HTC HD2.
Additionally, we hope the HTC HD2's 5-megapixel autofocus camera and Dual LED flash will be incorporated in the HTC Passion. When we tested Verizon Wireless' HTC Imagio earlier this month, we found a 5-megapixel camera that took decent shots for a HTC phone. We can't imagine the HTC Passion will offer anything of lower quality, given its obvious multimedia- and consumer-centric concept.
Of course, the big news of the week has yet to be properly announced, and we're still waiting for some official information on the HTC Hero for Verizon Wireless, so we guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens when it comes to the HTC Passion. One thing is certain though, Verizon Wireless has a slim portfolio of smartphones compared to the other major carriers, so we say: bring 'em on!
