Sony Ericsson today announced their newest addition to T-Mobile's 3G phone lineup, the Sony Ericsson Equinox. Equinox is the new name for the Sony Ericsson T707, a phone we saw earlier this year at the Spring CTIA show. The newly christened Sony Ericsson Equinox is a basic, fashionable flip phone. It's somewhat light on features, though it does pack a few niceties that fashionistas will appreciate. Beyond the stylish shell, the phone also features some customizable light effects. When paired with your T-Mobile MyFaves list, the Sony Ericsson Equinox will light up in one of five colors, each representing a different person from your calling circle.
In addition to the flashing lights, the Sony Ericsson Equinox also features a hidden OLED screen on the exterior shell that comes to life when you get an incoming call. There's also a 3.2-megapixel camera onboard, and to share your nightly excursions, Sony Ericsson has also included software to automatically upload videos from the phone directly to YouTube. The phone uses T-Mobile's 3G network for data, so video uploads should be tolerable.
The Sony Ericsson Equinox also features some gesture controls. You can swing the phone around to silence a call or an alarm without opening the device. Under the flip, there's a 2.2-inch, QVGA screen. Inside, the phone packs GPS for turn-by-turn navigation, as well as an FM radio.
T-Mobile and Sony Ericsson are going to some humorous lengths to promote the device, though perhaps only blondes need apply? The carrier is sponsoring a Maria Sharapova look-a-like contest. If you think that you look, dress or perhaps act like the fashionable tennis pro, you can show up to the new T-Mobile store in Los Angeles on Halloween this year to compete for the chance to meet the star. Oh, they're also giving away the phone, but that's hardly the point. If you don't resemble a blond Russian tennis star, you can enter to win a trip to L.A. to meet Kim Kardashian and receive a makeover from her personal glam squad.
For the rest of us, the Sony Ericsson Equinox will be available in T-Mobile stores on October 28. The phone will cost $50 with a contract agreement.
