Windows 7 Computers Offered Through Microsoft Online StoreBy Sindre Lia, 22 October 2009
New Microsoft retail stores will among other things sell Windows phones and let users create custom ring tones using Microsoft Surface tables. Microsoft's online store will sell Windows 7 computers.

Whether you're looking to upgrade your machine with a copy of Windows 7 or want to buy an entirely new Windows 7 powered computer, the Microsoft Online Store will let you do both. A range of laptops from HP, Acer, Dell, Lenovo and Sony can be found here, while three 10.1-inch netbooks by Lenovo, Acer and Sony can be found here.

According to Microsoft, the aim is to offer Windows 7 computers, third-party software titles and a wide selection of computing accessories in one place. Today Microsoft is also opening its first flagship retail store in Scottsdale, Arizona, where Microsoft fans can check out a select line of laptops, netbooks, all-in-one PCs, Xbox consoles, Windows Mobile phones and one of the largest selection of third-party software titles in any store. A second store will open Thursday, October 29 in Mission Viejo, California.

When shopping in Microsoft's new retail stores, customers will be able to personalize and customize their computers, Xboxes, Zunes and other devices with external "skins", through a partnership with an outside company called Skin-It. Whether you want to have Disney characters on your laptop or an NFL team on your Xbox, Microsoft will build a library of licensed products that you can use, or you can also bring in a picture of your dog or your family and make it custom.

Another personalization feature for customers is the ability to create an original ring tone for their Windows phone. The Microsoft store is set up with Microsoft Surface tables that make it as easy as selecting a theme and "drawing" the tone, then sending it to your phone. According to store manager Cheryl Hibbard, the Surface tables can also be used to compare cell phone rate plans.

Once a PC is purchased, store employees will offer a 15-minute setup session to help customers set up their passwords and networks, and tailor their browser, e-mail and other applications to their personal preferences. The customer feedback from the two first retail stores will help guide Microsoft's plans for the development of additional stores.
