Sprint and Samsung today announced the upcoming arrival of the Samsung Intrepid, a Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone in a slab QWERTY form factor. The Samsung Intrepid (full specs) improves upon previous Samsung Windows phones with a user interface that offers a customizable Today screen to display the features the user accesses most often and shows information like new e-mails, text messages, missed calls and calendar appointments.
The Samsung Intrepid also has a richer Internet browsing experience and new personalization options including a diverse selection of designer themes and the ability to create an original look for your phone with the built-in theme creator. Featuring Internet Explorer Mobile 6, the Samsung Intrepid can access sites such as YouTube for video streaming courtesy of the Adobe Flash Lite 3 plug-in. The phone also supports Windows Marketplace for Mobile (app store) and Microsoft My Phone (a service that allows users to manage and backup personal information).
The Samsung Intrepid features a 2.5-inch touchscreen interface with a QVGA resolution of 320 by 240 pixels, full QWERTY keyboard and a 3.2-megapixel camera. Furthermore, the phone offers Microsoft ActiveSync and Microsoft Office Mobile (edit Word and Excel files, view PowerPoint), Windows Mobile e-mail (work & personal), stereo Bluetooth, microSD slot supporting up to 32GB cards, Wi-Fi connectivity as well as instant messaging and threaded text messaging. The Samsung Intrepid also boasts a Smart Reader, which scans business cards using the integrated camera.
The Samsung Intrepid from Sprint is the first device to offer Microsoft's Tellme mobile experience, which allows customers to use their voice to dial a contact, compose a text message and search the Web. The phone is also a part of Sprint's line of international devices allowing its customers to leverage Sprint's domestic network and other networks abroad. Additional carrier services include Sprint TV, Sprint Music store, Sprint NFL Mobile Live and NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile.
The Samsung Intrepid will be available on October 11, selling for $250 with a two-year contract. A $100 mail-in rebate will be given when signing up for a qualifying plan.
