Palm WebOS 1.2 will be pushed to Palm Pre smartphones in the next days, offering a wide range of improvements including Amazon MP3 OTA downloads.

The Palm Pre will get a software upgrade in the next few days. The latest version, Palm WebOS 1.2, addresses several security issues and adds a ton of tweaks and improvements to the WebOS. Here's a quick overview of the key upgrades:

  • Amazon MP3
  • Songs can now be purchased from Amazon MP3 over a phone network connection. A Wi-Fi connection is no longer required.
  • App Catalog
  • In preparation for e-commerce in the App Catalog, you can now enter credit card information to the Palm profile. It's now also possible to reinstall a purchased application you previously deleted for free.
  • Calendar
  • Several improvements.
  • Contacts
  • Several improvements, including support for LinkedIn synchronization.
  • E-mail
  • Several improvements, including Exchange management and security related improvements.
  • Photos
  • The Photos app can now display photos in JPG, BMP and PNG format.
  • Sprint Navigation
  • Now pulls Google contacts from the phone, as well as Exchange and Palm profile contacts.
  • System
  • Several tweaks.
  • Tasks
  • Tasks that are assigned a category now retain the category when they synchronize between the phone and your desktop. Other information including start date, status, reminder setting, and privacy setting is also retained.
  • Web browser
  • The browser now supports downloading files from a web page. It's also possible to quickly copy images in the abovementioned formats to the Photos app.
  • Security
  • The release addresses several security issues with Palm WebOS software.
