Pretty much on a weekly basis, we post reviews of cell phones and smartphones that have been customized by carriers. Unlike user customization, carrier customization is meant to stay put through the lifecycle of a device (unless there are firmware upgrades pushed). Since Maemo 5 doesn't offer that possibility, Nokia worries that carriers will skip picking up Maemo 5 powered devices, according to Mobile News. The good news is that Nokia expects this issue to be solved with Maemo 6.
Of course, the Nokia N900 will still be offered as an unlocked device, which can now be pre-ordered for $650. Some are still hoping that T-Mobile USA will subsidize the Nokia N900, but we had our doubts about that on the announcement day, and we're still not convinced that the carrier will make a move. In a recent story, we pointed out that AT&T could be more willing to make a move, though that's just our point of view. Of course, we could be wrong about everything here, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens in October.
