It's the final day of Nokia World 2009, and it looks like 2011 will become a key year for both Symbian and Maemo. Until then, new developer SDKs will help S60 5th Edition.
A month ago, the Symbian Foundation revealed that Symbian^4 with Qt UI will be hardened in late 2010. In the same timeframe, Maemo 6 will be released with Qt UI. New smartphones based on Symbian^4 and Maemo 6 are planned to be released in 2011 at the latest. Yesterday we pointed out that there was something missing at Nokia World 2009, and in worst case we might have to wait until Nokia World 2011 before seeing flagship models for high-end consumers that really nails it (the mid-range stuff is a different story, of course, which is also what drives the S60 sales numbers).
Still, there's no doubt that Nokia has scrambled its developers lately, as an upgraded version of Symbian S60 5th Edition will be rolled out for the Nokia N97 and N97 mini in October. Today, Nokia also announced new developer SDKs for better integration of Web content in S60 5th Edition, similar to what Facebook has taken advantage of with the Facebook integration in Nokia Messaging.
We like this latest move by Nokia, since we aren't fans of pure Widgets on smartphones. Widgets are great to enhance cell phones, but there's something wrong when you can't get more out of a smartphone platform than "running" Widgets. The new developer SDKs will definitely help Nokia on the road to offering high-end consumer phones with passion, but it looks like 2011 will be the year when Nokia's smartphones will get a new beginning, perhaps of the revolutionary kind (at least that's what Nokia keeps promising).
