We've heard about the Nokia N97 mini through rumors for quite a while now, and the smartphone got its official announcement at Nokia World today. The N97 mini is 12 grams lighter and slightly more compact than its big brother. As a result, Nokia shaves the talk time from 360 to 240 minutes, internal memory from 32GB to 8GB, and the screen from 3.5 to 3.2 inches (check out a full comparison here). As far as other specs are concerned, it seems like the Nokia N97 mini is mostly equal to the Nokia N97.
More important, the Nokia N97 mini will get the latest version of S60 5th Edition when being released in October. This version will also be available as a free upgrade over-the-air to N97 users. The key upgrade includes Lifecasting with Ovi, an application that lets people publish their location and status updates directly to their Facebook account from the home screen of a mobile device. The new software update also brings new home screen widgets and additional usability improvements including flick scrolling.
Furthermore, the Nokia N97 mini is powered by a new Ovi Maps experience, aiming to make searching, finding and navigating easier (to better compete with Google Maps). In addition to global pedestrian navigation, people can access content from Lonely Planet, Michelin and Wcities.
The Nokia N97 mini will be available in October 2009 for an estimated retail price of EUR 450 before taxes and subsidies.
