Samsung's newest PMP is DivX certified and begs to be touched and scratched. Check out the Samsung R1 here.
Samsung today announced the launch of their newest portable multimedia player, the Samsung R1. Even as PMPs are slowly fading as cell phones take on their multimedia responsibilities, Samsung recognizes this by identifiying the Samsung R1 as a "beat player," perhaps a reference to the Samsung Beat DJ and Beat Disc phones announced early this year that use Bang & Olufsen sound technology. In fact, the touchscreen interface on the Samsung R1 shares thematic elements with the Beat phones. The Samsung R1 will be quite slim, only 8.9mm thick and weighing only 50 grams, and Samsung claims the player will be small enough that users will be able to slip the device into their wallets, without compromising on user-friendliness, durability and performance.
Samsung claims the Samsung R1 beat player will be the first DivX-certified MP3 player, which should give movie lovers more options to view their own flicks on the Samsung R1's screen. The R1 will use a 2.6-inch touchscreen, which is a bit on the small side, but small and thin seems to be the name of the game with this device.
Like Samsung's latest touchscreen phones (to read our reviews of some of Samsung's latest phones, click here), the Samsung R1 will incorporate the companies ubiquitous TouchWiz interface. The Samsung R1 will also come with a "Beat DJ" feature, which will allow users to add their own voice and sound effects to songs. The Beat DJ feature will also let users 'scratch' records on the 2.6-inch touchscreen using their fingers to control the scratching.
The Samsung R1 will be available in Europe in September. Pricing for the device has yet to be announced. The R1 will ship in 8GB and 16GB capacity models. Other markets, especially the Asian market, will follow after a European launch. Samsung hasn't specifically announced plans to bring the Samsung R1 beat player to the U.S., but we'd never rule out the possibility.
