The updated Sony S Series and E Series Walkman players will include a content sharing app to sync with iTunes.

Sony today introduced the latest in the S Series Walkman family. The new Sony S Series Walkman will feature high-quality built-in stereo speakers that will let buyers share music out loud without a headset. Of course, we're always skeptical of sound quality on such a diminutive device, so we'll have to hear the new S Series Walkman for ourselves before we decide if they're a useful idea, and more elegant than the chunkier Samsung YP-S5 player that also had built-in speakers

Rock and roll all night

The Sony S Series Walkman will manage some impressive battery life, if Sony's estimates play out. Sony claims the new S Series device will see up to 42 hours of music playback, dipping to a still impressive 17 hours of playback through the device's built-in speakers. Playing video, the S Series Walkman should get 6.5 hours on headphones or up to 5 hours of video playback using the built-in speakers.

The Sony S Series Walkman comes with an FM radio on board, and you can even record directly from the radio to the Walkman's built-in memory. You can also record voice notes to the Walkman's storage. The S Series Walkman will come in a variety of colors, including red, violet and pink, and capacities ranging from 8GB to 16GB of storage.

Give me an S! Give me an E!

Sony has also introduced the new lower-end E Series Walkman. The E Series is basically a slightly shrunken version of the S Series Walkman, without the speakers on board. While the latter S Series uses a 2.4-inch screen, the E Series packs only a 2-inch display, though both run at the same QVGA resolution. What's more interesting is that both the new Walkman families will ship with Sony's Content Transfer app, which will provide a bridge to sync the new devices with iTunes 8.1, or a standard media folder.

The new Sony E Series Walkman will be available in red and black and also in 8GB or 16GB capacities. The more expensive Sony Walkman S Series, like the Sony Walkman NWZ-S540, will be available in 8GB and 16GB capacities in September for $110 and $130. The Sony E Series Walkman will be available next month for $80 and $100.
