New Fujifilm compact cameras are just shinierBy Mike Perlman, 22 July 2009
Four new Fujifilm compact cameras have many similarities, including the fact that their upgrades are not very exciting. Read the full scoop here.

Fujifilm rolled out four new models geared toward various types of budget shooters today. The Fujifilm Finepix Z37 is the company's update to the Finepix Z30, a pint-sized fashion cam known for its electric hues and rounded, pebble-like architecture. The new Fujifilm Finepix J38 is the follow-up to the Finepix J20, which is more of a simple everyman compact with a basic set of features and portable design. The new Fujifilm A220 and A170 are the company's base offerings this summer, hyping some of the lowest price tags in the business.

We'll start with the Fujifilm Finepix Z37 (gallery) because the thing is just impossible to ignore. The 10-megapixel Finepix Z37 looks more like a space hovercraft from the Jetsons than an ultra compact point-and-shoot, and it's hard to believe that the camera is actually thinner and smaller than its diminutive predecessor. The Fujifilm Finepix Z37 features a standard 1/2.3-inch CCD, 2.7-inch LCD and menial 3x optical zoom. The camera will have Blog mode for instant image uploading, Scene Recognition Auto (SR Auto) mode and the latest Face Detection technology, which is capable of capturing up to 10 faces at a time and zapping red eye. The Fujifilm Finepix Z37 can reach an ISO level of 1600 and is equipped with a Picture Stabilization mode that operates via the heightened sensitivity of the camera. Available in Blue, Green or Violet, the Fujifilm Finepix Z37 is expected to ship in August for $150.

Meanwhile, Fujifilm was busy adding another member to the J-series family, hence the announcement of the 12-megapixel Fujifilm Finepix J38 (gallery). The compact hypes a 22mm ultra thin body, but aside from the sensor upgrade, the camera shares practically all of its features with the Finepix Z37. That means the Fujifilm Finepix offers a 3x optical zoom and 2.7-inch LCD, in addition to SR Auto mode and advanced Face Detection with red eye removal. We get Picture Stabilization, a handful of Scene modes and an ISO that can reach 3200, but only with a 3-megapixel image. So, for 20 smackers less, you can have the Fujifilm Finepix J38, which is set to ship in August for $130.

And last but not least, Fujifilm announced two AA battery compacts, the Fujifilm A220 (gallery) and Fujifilm A170 (gallery). Price Point is the captain of this ship, and the MSRPs of both models seem to be their most attractive features. Both cameras will feature SR Auto mode, Face Detection and 3x optical zooms, as well as 2.7-inch LCDs. ISO levels of up to 1600 will be available as a Picture Stabilization feature, just like the aforementioned Fujifilm Finepix Z37 and Fujifilm Finepix J38 compacts. The only difference between both silver surfers is that the Fujifilm A220 will have a 12-megapixel sensor while the Fujifilm A170 will have a 10-megapixel sensor. Both budget and user-friendly compacts are set to sail later this month. The Fujifilm Finepix A220 will retail for $100 while the Fujifilm A170 will be $90.
