On the very same day Nokia and Intel announces a strategic relationship for the future of netbooks, Engadget simply thinks the product category will die soon.
In a commentary referred to as "Entelligence", Engadget today simply stated that the netbook as a product category will soon die. Why, you ask? The two laptop makers that tend to put the latest, greatest and most expensive technology you can find into a stylish laptop casing haven't cranked out a single netbook yet.
To be honest, just the fact that Apple and Sony haven't released netbooks doesn't make the product category a failure. What the category lacks is simply technology that is optimized for the future in mobility. Today, Nokia and Intel just happened to announce a strategic partnership of developing technology that will make netbooks more versatile and useful in the future. And they are already late to the party.
Additionally, who would have thought Apple would release the Apple Macbook Air a few years ago? Furthermore, what about the just announced Sony Vaio NW? Both laptops tell us that both Apple and Sony are more than willing to experiment with laptop solutions that are "underpowered" for their purpose. In fact, at the rate Apple is currently cranking out both software and hardware upgrades to the iPhone, it wouldn't surprise us if Apple will steal the glory with a next-gen netbook at some point too.
