T-Mobile today officially unveiled their long-rumored follow-up to their T-Mobile G1, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G. The T-Mobile myTouch 3G (specs) is a tablet phone, so it does not use a slide-out keyboard like the G1, and instead users will rely on the onscreen keyboards recently added to the Google Android OS with the so-called Android 1.5 Cupcake update.
New customization options
The phone is a much slimmer phone than its predecessor, but otherwise utilizes a very similar feature set to drive the Android platform. In addition to the new button arrangement on the face, changes from the original T-Mobile G1 system seem to be customization options and new user themes that T-Mobile will be packing onto this device. Another, and more significant, difference between the T-Mobile G1 and the myTouch 3G is the latter's Exchange ActiveSync support.
The phone features a 3.2-inch HVGA (half-VGA resolution, or 320 by 480 pixels) display. In addition to the fast, 3G networking on T-Mobile's budding HSDPA network, the phone will also use a 3.2-megapixel, auto focus camera. For music and additional storage, the phone will come pre-loaded with a 4GB microSD card, a nice start, though power users will want to upgrade to 16GB. The device is being manufactured by HTC, like the original T-Mobile G1, and in terms of specs seems remarkably similar to the HTC Magic now available in foreign market.
T-Mobile is stressing customization with the myTouch 3G, and to that end the carrier is including an app called Sherpa. The company claims that Sherpa will somehow monitor users habits to create a more personalized, custom experience. The app seems to revolve around the retail shopping and location-based services experience, as T-Mobile says Sherpa will use behaviors and user feedback to prioritizerecommended retailers, restaurants and attractions. We'll have to get our hands on the phone to learn more about how this app actually works.
Price and release date
The T-Mobile myTouch 3G will be available for pre-order for existing T-Mobile customers on July 8 for $200 with a contract agreement. Pre-ordered devices will start shipping in late July, with a full national rollout planned for early August.
