Tired of that conventional mouse? The Hillcrest Labs Loop pointer will turn interface browsing into a futuristic experience. Read the full story here.

Today, consumers are given a chance to test-drive the award-winning Hillcrest Labs Loop pointer, a doughnut-shaped wireless mouse that utilizes Freespace technology. Geared toward users who frequently connect their home TV to a PC or Mac, the Loop pointer is an alternative way to navigate throughout its particular interface. Based on a recent CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) report, over 7 million US homes have connected their personal PC or Mac to a TV, and we expect that number to climb.

With four buttons and a scroll wheel, Hillcrest Labs is aiming for ergonomic comfort and a minimalist control configuration. The Loop pointer appears to compliment the hand nicely and supports the ability to roam around the vicinity of the TV, as long as it is within 30 feet. Connectivity is taken care of by a small USB 2.0 transceiver that plugs directly into a compatible computer or device with no special driver or software required.

The Hillcrest Labs Loop pointer is not only a mouse for TV, but it is also being marketed as a PowerPoint presenter tool. Other applications like the KODAK Theatre HD player will support the Loop pointer, functioning as an alternative controller that interacts with pictures, videos and music. If you're sick of navigating through the Internet on your PS3 controller, the Loop pointer will take the reins, although it cannot be used as a game controller, which would be awesome for Halo. Apple TV also supports the Loop pointer, though aTV Flash from Fire Core.

The driving force behind the Loop Pointer is Freespace technology, patented by Hillcrest Labs. It uses high accuray/precision movement that allows users to point at individual pixels on a high-resolution screen and does not require line-of-site operation. Instead, the Loop pointer functions via RF (radio frequency) technology, banishing the need to point the Loop pointer directly at the screen for it to actually work. For the obsessive compulsive, computers could be stored in cabinets so they are out of sight and the Loop pointer will still function. The Loop pointer also features an Adaptive Tremor Removal, which senses between deliberate and inadvertent hand movement, and utilizes Orientation Compensation. With Orientation Compensation, users can hold the Loop pointer in any position they want, thanks to built-in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors.

The Hillcrest Labs Loop pointer is 4.8 inches in diameter, which is approximately the same diameter as a CD or DVD, with a 1.2-inch width. Tipping the scale at only 4.9 ounces, the Loop pointer is portable and should be easy to operate. In addition to the USB 2.0 antenna, the Loop pointer ships with two AA batteries.

The Hillcrest Labs Loop pointer is now available on Amazon and ships in black with silver buttons.
