The next generation Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 might have a range of high-end specs, but have we answered all the mysteries?
Photographs and alleged specifications for a Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 device have been showing up on forums and rumor sites around the Web, with rumors heating up in the past week or so. Though Sony Ericsson has yet to officially announce any successor to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 (read our review here), company representatives have always described the Xperia line as an ongoing family. The supposed Xperia X2 device showing up in blurry photos strongly resembles the Xperia X1, with a larger screen and an overall simplified look. Rumored specs peg that screen at 3.5-inches, a full half inch larger than its predecessor.
The new Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 could also get an 8-megapixel camera, a nice step up from the 3.2-megapixel shooter on the original. Of course, we've already seen other Sony Ericsson phones with 8-megapixel sensors, like the Sony Ericsson W995, so this wouldn't put the phone at the high end of S/E devices. Otherwise, we still see an optical trackpad, a newly designed keyboard and a sleek new shell. Recent shots of a powered-up Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 show the device running the Windows Mobile 6.5 interface.
Panels was supposed to be a robust and extensible interface in the Xperia X1, but it was mostly just a bust. There was very little support at launch, and new panels have come at a trickle. Even worse, none of the panel experiences, even the polished Cross-Media Bar that Sony provided, lived up to the deep experience Sony Ericsson always promised with panels.
With the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, we'd like to see Sony Ericsson develop the panels into a more mature concept. Sony Ericsson phones are so segmented between their different brands, with newer brands on the way, it would be nice to see the Xperia X2 positioned as the top of the line phone, with the panels bringing all of these experiences together.
We'll be following Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 news closely. The previous device was announced a full 9 months before its launch, and some rumors suggest that the phone will be announced at Communicasia next week. We'd be surprised if Sony Ericsson kept this under their hat much longer, they love to promote products that are a long way from completion.
