4TB has finally hit the external hard drive world. The Mac-friendly Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II is here to start the party.

Sound the alarm and watch all the creative Macheads come flocking to embrace the latest breakthrough in the realm of external storage capacity. The Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II external hard drive packs in a whopping four terabytes of fertile digital soil for users to plant their massive Final Cut or Photoshop bumper crops on. This is another "World's First" claim, for Western Digital is the first company to bring such a large capacity to the external hard drive market.

What's more intriguing about the My Book Studio Edition II is that it's formatted specifically for Macs. Of course Windows users can reformat for Vista and Windows 7, but XP does not support drives over the 2TB ceiling. The Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II is also compatible with the Apple Time Machine automatic backup feature, so we're definitely seeing a major push toward the Mac user brigade.

The nifty thing about the Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II is that it's a dual-drive, enabling users to format an entirely different OS on either drive without having to partition. This is exceedingly helpful for those pesky Windows-only programs. With a RAID 0 configuration and eSATA, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 interfaces, Western Digital promises the My Book Studio Edition II to be lightning-quick. The My Book Studio Edition II also supports FireWire 400 for machines that are still stuck within the earliest stages of the new millennium.

Not only is the My Book Studio Edition II designed to be Autobahn-fast, but it utilizes Western Digital's GreenPower technology for a quiet and cool operation. Apparently, the My Book Studio Edition II uses one-third of the energy needed to power competing external dual-drives. Other goodies include a capacity gauge to determine how much of the memory pie has not been gobbled, automatic and continuous backup software and a five-year limited warranty.

The Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II is available now at select retailers and Western Digital's online store for $650.
