Apple didn't leave out the recently-updated Macbook Pro 17-inch, as the Macbook family swapped key features.
Apple left no stone unturned in updating the Macbook Pro family at WWDC in San Francisco today, though admittedly the Macbook Pro 17-inch gets the least exciting update of the bunch. This model was the first Macbook Pro to use the new built-in battery, and thanks to its larger size it sees the greatest benefits from the new battery tech. The largest Macbook Pro can get up to 8 hours of battery life from the new battery, compared to up to 7 hours of use on the newer, smaller Macbook Pro models.
Like the new Macbook Pro 15-inch model, the updated 17-inch edition will have a configurable option for faster processors. The standard model will ship with a faster 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and Apple will have a faster 3.06 GHz chip available as a custom option.
The new Macbook Pro 17-inch will also see bumps to storage technology. The standard HDD is now available in capacities up to 500GB, or users can configure an SSD option with 256GB of storage for an additional $650 over the base price. The large Macbook Pro will ship with a standard 4GB of RAM, or you can add an extra 4GB of RAM for a whopping 8GB, at an equally imposing price of $1000 extra when purchased directly from Apple.
The Macbook Pro 17-inch is now a less expensive machine than before. The base price has dropped $300, and the machine now starts at $2500 with 4GB of RAM, a slower, 500GB hard disk drive, a 2.8 GHz processor and an NVIDIA 9600M GT chipset with 512MB of RAM for graphical power.
Unlike the other new models, the Macbook Pro 17-inch will not get an SD card slot, and this will be the only Apple portable left with an Express card. This is too bad, and we're wondering why Apple can cram an SD reader into the tiny 13-inch machine, but can't find the space in the Aircraft Carrier-sized Macbook Pro 17-inch. The new machine will be available immediately.
