iPhone 3G
If you're a true multimedia geek, or simply craving for the magical touch, the iPhone 3G will give you gadget pleasure more than anything else out there. Video streaming, touch-gaming and eBook reading are the hot news in the iPhone world right now. It's hard to ask for more while waiting for the next-generation iPhone to take our breath away. We're obviously curious about the rumors of Apple making its own iPhone chipset, which could be coming with a 3D graphics engine on-chip. It sounds too soon to hope for such a miracle in 2009 though, so we're just happy with all the apps and services that are blossoming in the App Store now.
T-Mobile G1
Finding 3G coverage for the T-Mobile G1 is perhaps a geek's biggest challenge, but T-Mobile has promised massive network expansion this year. So if you love to wait for good things to come, and literally refuse to touch anything but Linux based systems, you won't find a smarter phone than the G1. The missing piece of the software puzzle is starting to gather around the Android Marketplace, and we assume the recently released developer version of the G1 will give it all a push in the right direction. There are for instance a lot of great applications for other platforms, that we're sure is currently being ported to Android. And if you enjoy a well-performing camera, you won't find a better one on a $180 smartphone.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X1
HTC already had a G1 in the making, so X1 became its name. If you possess the required skills, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1's only limit is the Random Access Memory. If we hadn't been busy running infoSync, we might have devoted our spare time to crank out Xperia panels just for the fun of it. We're still eagerly awaiting more panels that takes advantage of the built-in 3D graphics engine, but at least there's now panels for Facebook, Twitter (via Dashwire) and a soon-to-come Skype panel. We're also still awaiting the browsing power that Sony Ericsson promised when the X1 was announced, so we'll keep our fingers crossed for a final release of Opera Mobile 9.5 to be released soon. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is seriously expensive at $800, but that only makes it a unique geek phone, or what?
