Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders Demonstrate Panasonic's Face RecognitionBy Mike Perlman, 28 January 2009
The pom-poms are out and we scored a touchdown with Panasonic's new Face Recognition technology. Read on for an in-depth account, complete with enlightening pictures.

"Face Recognition" is the next wave of visage-geared technology, and who better to demonstrate Panasonic's latest phenomenon than three Miami Dolphins cheerleaders? Though it was a nearly insurmountable task to remain focused, we were able to extract the general concept behind Face Recognition, which will be available exclusively on the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580, Lumix DMC-FX48, Lumix DMC-ZS3 and Lumix DMC-TS1.

Customize your friends

The first step is to register a particular individual, and this process consists of a few key elements in order to help the camera "remember" a designated face. We chose a delightful little heart icon for Ariana. Quite fitting, isn't it? Icons can be assigned to an individual in order to help distinguish between others, and it adds a little fun into the mix. Panasonic said that individuals could be prioritized in a numerical order. This way you can truly decide which friends are more important than others.

Add a name

Once you've chosen the appropriate icon, it's time to set the individual's name. As we see in the deliberately cropped right hand corner of this image, Ariana's name is being registered. Now, this is the same interface as Panasonic's Lumix DMC-TZ50, which is more sluggish than a Model T stuck in molasses. You'll be pounding away in fury, attempting to mash the correct information via ultimate vexation. Once you've finally managed to register the name and everyone around you has left, it's time to find them and take some pictures.

Target lock

As we can see in this picture, Ariana is framed with her name proudly displayed beneath. As the three lovely ladies shuffled around, Ariana's face bracket was at times inadvertently passed on to her two cohorts, but for the most part managed to stay focused on her beaming smile.

How does this technology work? Panasonic told us that the ratios of facial attributes and their proximity to one another is how the camera calculates and stores a face. For instance, if a person's eyes are far apart or they're next-door neighbors, the camera will take this information into account. The size of a face also has a bearing, but we're not sure how depth and perspective will affect accuracy. We also wonder if Face Recognition can distinguish between blondes and brunettes.

Moment of zen
