The new LG Watch phone packs surprising features like a touchscreen, music and 3G networking.

We've seen big, clunky watch phones before, but nothing nearly as clever and elegant as the LG GD910 Watch phone. The LG Watch phone looks like a sleek, albeit somewhat large watch, and under the customizable clocks on the outside (it is a watch, after all) hides a surprisingly robust multimedia phone. How robust? The LG Watch phone uses HSDPA for 3G networking, and will even support AT&T's 3G bands. We're not sure how a Web browser would look on that 1.4-inch screen, but we'd love to use the GD910 as a tethered modem with our laptop.

Touch my face

Besides the fast networking, the watch uses a touchscreen interface. We weren't allowed to tap on the tempered glass ourselves, but we spied our friendly LG rep swiping at the screen to change functions, which makes us think that the phone / watch will be gesture controlled. The dialer was tiny, but not too small to dial a phone number accurately. The LG Watch phone will even get voice recognition, so you can skip the dialer altogether. The phone has a speaker onboard so you can talk directly to your wrist, or you can use Bluetooth for a wireless headphone setup.

An MP3 player, too?

We're not sure what apps will come loaded on the device, but LG demonstrated the phone's music player. The player was simple, but this worked nicely on the phone's small screen. Album cover artwork came through okay, and the LG Watch phone uses the touchscreen for playback control. We're assuming stereo Bluetooth headphones are the way to go there, as a wired pair might be unseemly.

Might have to buy one

What gadget hound hasn't longed for a cool watch phone? And the LG GD910, with its touchscreen interface, fast networking and multimedia features, is more than we could ask for in a watch / phone device. Pricing has yet to be announced, but so far the company is only planning on selling this phone in Europe. However, as we mentioned, we've heard that AT&T's 3G network will be supported, so the LG Watch phone might be a hot import when it comes out, later this year.
