If we were to sum up the LG U880 in a sentence, we’d say it gets the basics right. An excellent keypad serves to interact with a crisp and bright internal display which handles video calls and streaming with aplomb. Despite its slim and streamlined clamshell design, battery life is also more than acceptable, and the handset’s only real drawbacks is its somewhat exaggerated claim of being a music phone and only average performance on behalf of its camera. Add an all-black and sleek design to a slider handset and it'll be a definitive hit - and even more so if you throw in an impressively bright and clear high-resolution screen to act as the viewfinder for a Megapixel camera snapping high-quality stills. Still, its superbly slim form factor has led the handset to make some compromises, including a mediocre navigational pad and battery life. A no-frills clamshell with an industrial look and sturdy feel to it, the BenQ-Siemens EF81 offers a comprehensive range of features which include a mediocre 2 Megapixel camera; a sub-par MP3 player; and slightly underperforming 3G connectivity with video calling and a limited browser. Its best attributes, meanwhile include the excellent screen, its spacious keypad and the quality design which feels near-unbreakable. As far as clamshell phones go, it comes recommended for those in need of a rounded feature set, and it's also a decent slim phone for the same reason - as well as its anorectic 16 mm thickness. The U890's appeal lies in its achievement of getting the basics right - with the exception of its poorly designed numerical keypad, which presents something of a bump in the road. Nevertheless, this clamshell packs a good amount of features into a slim form factor with 3G capabilities including snappy transfer speeds and video calls among the main selling points along with a nice display. Compared to higher-end models, the handset's browser, integrated music player and camera are of the mediocre sort - but as matched with its closest competitors, the U890 does quite well for itself. Rarely have we seen a slim phone which leaves such an admirable first impression. The elegantly designed KG320 is a handset which doesn't compromise on ergonomics in order to achieve a slimmer form factor, resulting in the inclusion of a high-quality keypad and an excellent display in a wafer-thin form factor. World's slimmest 3G handset or not; Samsung's SGH-Z150 packs plenty of features into its wafer-thin appearances - but could just as well have done without most of them since the handset is mostly good for scheduling and basic messaging. Poor voice quality, no vibrating alert, worse photos, horrid battery life and a straight-jacket memory situation combine to deliver a striking blow to the handset's usability - and a well-earned 'avoid like the plague' recommendation. The latest addition to Samsung's venerable line-up of slider handsets, the SGH-D870 is a 3 Megapixel camera phone closely related to the previously released SGH-T809 and SGH-D820. The Q looks great: slipping it in a jeans pocket is no problem, and it was easy to hold against our cheek during calls. The QWERTY keypad is refreshingly roomy, making for good two- or even one-handed typing. The display looked bright and razor-sharp to our eyes; unfortunately, it isn’t a touchscreen. Our Web browsing on the mobile Internet Explorer was relatively speedy thanks to the Q’s EV-DO connection. The Q’s relative simplicity comes with some important limitations: namely, the lack of a full Office Mobile suite. Its messaging features are up to snuff, however, and music mavens will get a kick out of the mobile Windows Media Player. The Q's 1.3-megapixel camera took surprisingly good pictures for a smartphone. We got about 4.5 hours of talk time for the Q, but conference calling is surprisingly missing. More...
