Sony Ericsson W810i
Score: 90% When: April 2006 Worth: €425 What: Music phones, Sony Ericsson phones
Picking up where the W800i left off, the Sony Ericsson W810i offers improved music navigation in tandem with the same excellent music management capabilities and decent amount of bundled memory as its predecessor. Out-of-box audio quality is on par with the high standards we’ve come to except from the handset maker, while we’re slightly disappointed by the lack of stereo Bluetooth audio. These niggles aside, the W810i makes for a stellar music phone with side servings of a 2 Megapixel camera and EDGE. More...

Samsung SGH-i300
Score: 85% When: November 2005 Worth: €115 - €650 What: Music phones, Business phones
It may not look like a music phone at first glance, but looks can be deceiving: outstanding audio quality, intuitive and comfortable navigation, spacious storage and first-rate synchronization render the SGH-i300 the best music phone we’ve reviewed to date. As if that wasn’t enough, it’s also a first-class alternative for business users not in need of editing capabilities, and contains a raft of clever little touches which show attention to detail and result in a finely polished handset. Heartily recommended. More...

Nokia N91
Score: 85% When: May 2006 Worth: €675 - €650 What: Phones, Music phones
Not much holds the N91 back from scoring full marks in the music department; the lack of bundled quality headphones and stereo Bluetooth audio is about it. Otherwise excellent audio quality, an intuitive interface, comfortable controls and superb music transfer capabilities including Windows Media Connect support are all favoured traits, as is the massive 4 GB of storage - although we're a bit miffed by the rotund form factor. Voice and messaging capabilities are first-rate with the exception of a slightly cramped keypad, while the 2 Megapixel camera and browser are unlikely to impress. As a result of its varied feature set and hard drive reliance, battery life is expectedly average, but the N91 still outperforms the vast majority of music phones at the time of writing. More...

Sony Ericsson W900i
Score: 75% When: December 2005 Worth: €550 - €650 What: 3G phones, Music phones
As a 3G phone, the Sony Ericsson W900i falls short only in the areas of web browsing and battery life - the latter of which is due to its extensive feature set. Despite these shortcomings, however, the handset goes on to impress with snappy and comprehensive connectivity, hassle-free video calling and a glorious high-resolution screen. As for music, the W900i does an admirable job of replacing lower-end MP3 players with its high sound quality and intuitive user interface, but doesn’t offer the most extensive memory with only 512 MB out-of-box. Sony Ericsson W800i
Score: 75% When: August 2005 Worth: €400 - €650 What: Music phones, Sony Ericsson phones
Music is key in Sony Ericsson’s first Walkman branded handset, the W800i. Outstanding audio quality combines with a user friendly interface to make for a compelling music experience fully capable of replacing lower-end MP3 players. The 512 MB of memory provided out-of-box is a bit cramped, though, which is unfortunate given the limited synchronization capabilities. This becomes even more of a pressing issue when the handset’s 2 Megapixel camera - in itself a high-performing feature - is taken into consideration. Still, there’s no denying that the W800i is a solid choice for feature-lusting handset buyers. More...

LG U400
When: July 2006 What: Phones, Music phones
Capable of holding a mere 20 MP3 files in its onboard memory, prospective owners of LG's new U400 music slider are likely to make heavy use of its memory expansion slot as they shop for music directly from the handset or transfer it from a PC. Supporting stereo audio over Bluetooth, users can navigate music via a large scroll wheel, looking up music by artist, title or genre, or alternatively snap stills with the integrated 2 Megapixel camera or browse Three's content services at 3G speeds. Sony Ericsson W300i
Score: 72% When: July 2006 Worth: €275 What: Phones, Music phones
Delivering music on the cheap, Sony Ericsson's W300i delivers something of a contrast-filled out-of-box experience with a first-rate interface and sound quality - offset by low storage and an otherwise anemic feature set. Fortunately, memory expansion and a friendly price tag saves the day, making this an excellent alternative for those desiring a mix of solid call and message handling and excellent music capabilities. BenQ-Siemens EF51
When: June 2006 What: Music phones, BenQ-Siemens phones
For a music phone, the EF51 fails to impress. Although audio quality proved good, the music management capabilities of the handset were distinctly sub-par as compared to other dedicated music phones, while controls were difficult to distinguish and poorly laid out. In fact, the EF51 gives off a rather cheap overall feel, which is further solidified by its cramped display and 1.3 Megapixel camera. Lastly, we can't say we cared much for the push-through solution chosen for the music flip which affixes to the similarly so-so keypad. More...

Sony Ericsson W700i
Score: 65% When: May 2006 Worth: €350 What: Music phones, Sony Ericsson phones
With 256 MB of bundled memory and a 2 Megapixel camera sans autofocus, the W700i is, in essence, a W800i light - although with speedy USB 2.0 as a welcome addition. Numerous software installs present something of a hassle, but the handset itself offers the Sony Ericsson interface we've come to know and love - background music playback included. Sound, screen and overall performance all qualify for the mid-range, as does battery life with approximately 3.5 hours of talk, 6 days of standby and 15 hours of music playback in its Walkman mode. Its €350 price tag renders the maker's own W550/W600i slightly cheaper, but the W700i remains our preferred choice due to a better overall score.
