  Acer Media Gateway MG-3001P

Score: 92% When: November 2005 Worth: €250

With the exception of lacking content services, Acer's Media Gateway MG-3001P comes very close to being the perfect media extender. Excellent support for audio, video and picture formats combines with high-resolution input and an intuitive user interface to make for a highly enjoyable experience. We're disappointed by its lack of Secure WMA support and DVI/HDMI connections as well as its inability to skip and reverse video, but neither represent considerable showstoppers - and a nice price tag further contributes to the MG-3001P coming highly recommended.   Philips Streamium SL400i

Score: 88% When: November 2004 Worth: €325

With comprehensive video format support, excellent performance and a soothingly friendly user interface, the Streamium SL400i will have media streaming to your living room in no time. Networking support is comprehensive and easily understood, although more information concerning Wi-Fi security would have been appreciated; audio and picture format support and functionality are adequate, and the price tag is not the least bit off-putting considering a 802.11g USB dongle is bundled. Unfortunately, sub-par TV output from the analog-only tuner along with excessive fan and hard drive noise mar what is otherwise a solid offering to the extent that heavy TV users should consider looking elsewhere while others should consider their tolerance for audible annoyances before purchasing.
