Dell Axim X51v
Score: 87% When: September 2005 Worth: €390 What: Handhelds
The embodiment of incrementality, the Dell Axim X51v only stands apart from its predecessor through its software and increased memory. Still, this elegant handheld harbours specifications that can compete with the best of the best, but we’re disappointed to see the improvements for one-handed navigation in Windows Mobile 5.0 exploited so poorly. For those who don’t mind relying on a stylus, the X51v is a top-notch handheld which shines from both a hardware and software perspective - and like its predecessor, it’s wallet-friendly priced. Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX 720
Score: 83% When: November 2004 Worth: €700 What: Handhelds
There is no doubting that the LOOX 720 offers an excellent feature set: a fast processor, plenty memory, broad connectivity options and a superb screen are among its strongpoints, as is an attractive design. The software has its drawbacks, but there are no show-stoppers in that department either - yet there is one thing that mars the LOOX 720, and that is its price tag. Better featured Pocket PCs can easily be gotten for less, so unless the digital camera is of prime importance, buyers would be wise to consider alternatives before purchasing. More...

Dell Axim X50v
Score: 80% When: October 2004 Worth: €500 What: Handhelds
The Dell Axim X50v offers a solid high-end Windows Mobile handheld. Its video capabilities are first rate given its VGA screen and dedicated 3D graphics processor, yet battery life is still respectable and the connectivity options are first-rate. On the other hand, the new Media Player is a step backward in terms of usability and is its chief features are only useful if the user ties himself to Windows Media format and applications, something not all uses are willing or able to do. The inclusion of DRM-restrictions is also unfortunate. Still, the X50v offers an attractive high-end Windows Mobile handheld. More...

palmOne LifeDrive
Score: 80% When: May 2005 Worth: €500 What: Handhelds
The palmOne LifeDrive is a jack of all trades, and as is often the case is therefore king of few. The PIM suite is palmOne’s familiar best-of-breed software, although the hard buttons don’t default to it. Its office suite is first-rate, and paired with a folding keyboard functions as a limited but pocketable laptop replacement. Wide audio format support counters its large size, and despite a small screen it’s no worse at video than the rest of a still-infant category with regard to media provision. 4 GB of luscious storage is offset by a noticeably sluggish system, but were all of these features to be purchased separately it would cost several hundred dollars more and outweigh the slightly weighty LifeDrive by a kilogram. If you can live with its sluggishness and weight, the LifeDrive is a truly comprehensive all-rounder. More...

HP iPAQ hx4700
Score: 77% When: October 2004 Worth: €650 What: Handhelds
If you’re willing to forego portability - and a hefty price tag - for features, the hx4700 is nothing less than an excellent option. This handheld brims with connectivity options, and impresses with its speedy and aesthetically pleasing interaction courtesy of the brilliant, high-resolution 4" display and powerful 624 MHz processor. We don’t care much for the touchpad, which performs only adequately and takes a while to get used to, but apart from this, the hx4700 is a very nice - albeit somewhat large and pricey - piece of kit.
