  Nokia E61

Score: 85% When: May 2006 Worth: €450 - €750 What: Business phones, Nokia phones

The E61 does what Nokia does best: connects people. Its all-encompassing connectivity setup is exploited in full by a broad line-up of quality messaging, office and browsing applications which run in tandem with a superb screen and more than decent thumbboard. Granted, it's not among the most powerful business phones nor does it fare well in the department of synchronization - but the latter is at long last addressable by several third party solutions. Sprinkle with handy utilities, attention to detail, good battery life and a compact form factor, and you end up with a very solid business phone contender indeed. More...

  Sony Ericsson M600i

Score: 84% When: July 2006 Worth: €500 - €750 What: Phones, Business phones

Quite possibly the ideal size for a business phone, the Sony Ericsson M600i is but a hair's width from scoring full marks in the messaging, productivity and browsing departments, hampered only by the smaller-than-the-competition sizes of its otherwise excellent touch screen and thumbboard. It also delivers a solid impression in every other department, with the near-sole disappointment being its lack of a bundled USB cable and USB charging support. Add good battery life and nice touches such as a scroll wheel, stereo Bluetooth audio and a clever, agenda-style standby screen, and what emerges is a winning recipe. More...

Also, the device incorporates Wi-Fi 802.11g for blazing speeds at short range, while tri-band UMTS support renders it a perfect choice for globetrotters with a craving for high-speed data. More...

  Motorola Q

When: January 2007 What: Business phones, Motorola phones

The Q looks great: slipping it in a jeans pocket is no problem, and it was easy to hold against our cheek during calls. The QWERTY keypad is refreshingly roomy, making for good two- or even one-handed typing. The display looked bright and razor-sharp to our eyes; unfortunately, it isn’t a touchscreen. Our Web browsing on the mobile Internet Explorer was relatively speedy thanks to the Q’s EV-DO connection. The Q’s relative simplicity comes with some important limitations: namely, the lack of a full Office Mobile suite. Its messaging features are up to snuff, however, and music mavens will get a kick out of the mobile Windows Media Player. The Q's 1.3-megapixel camera took surprisingly good pictures for a smartphone. We got about 4.5 hours of talk time for the Q, but conference calling is surprisingly missing. More...

A snappy performer not much larger than its predecessor, the MDA Vario, it also includes a redesigned yet highly comfortable thumbboard; a superb 2.8-inch touch screen; and a 2 Megapixel camera - all powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. Due out in the third quarter of 2006, price unknown.

  Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX T830

When: August 2006 Worth: €700 What: Business phones, GPS phones

The Fujitsu Siemens' Pocket LOOX T830 is an impressively compact yet connectivity-laden device which in addition to GPS also boasts 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 1.1 as well as a row of business-oriented features including a decent thumbboard and a 2 Megapixel camera for video calling. Unfortunately, its display is not only of low resolution but also rather small at 2.4 inches, and as such does not lend itself well to GPS navigation in addition to being somewhat cramped for ordinary use.
