Nokia N80
Score: 90% When: May 2006 Worth: €675 What: Camera phones, 3G phones
Starting off on a high note, the Nokia N80 camera phone lines up a brilliant high-resolution screen and 3 Megapixel-pushing camera only to put its foot in its mouth seconds later through the absence of an autofocus, which hampers its ability to produce quality stills with predictive consistency. Although it also includes the most extensive line-up of printing, publishing and image management services of any camera phone to date, it still falls marginally short of its N90 predecessor - yet retains broader overall appeal due to its music, business and wireless photo streaming functionality, rendering it a superb 3G phone. Nokia 6233
Score: 83% When: June 2006 Worth: €325 What: Phones, 3G phones
Although displaying Nokia's usual excellence in the departments of voice calls and messaging, Nokia's 6233 has several shortcomings which hamper various aspects of its use as a 3G phone. Among these, the lack of video calling and a poor browser affect use of the phone itself, while the omission of a USB cable means laptop users will be unable to reach maximize 3G bandwidth. It does, however, have good Bluetooth performance for those who prefer the unwired approach, and several other appealing features such as outstanding VGA video recording, an FM radio for aural entertainment and a very decent screen. Nokia N71
Score: 80% When: May 2006 Worth: €525 What: 3G phones, Nokia phones
In addition to Nokia's usual outstanding wireless performance, the slightly rotund N71 clamshell is an all-rounder which fares decently in most respects, be it whilst shooting quality 2 Megapixel stills; playing music - despite its poor out-of-box audio quality; or doing light e-mail and document viewing. Its main allure is the spacious, high-resolution 2.4-inch display which offers the ideal canvas for its browser - but sadly, this isn't fully exploited due to the lack of layout optimization. Still, the N71 offers a sufficiently broad mix of quality features to earn a hearty recommendation. More...

Sony Ericsson W900i
Score: 80% When: December 2005 Worth: €550 What: 3G phones, Music phones
As a 3G phone, the Sony Ericsson W900i falls short only in the areas of web browsing and battery life - the latter of which is due to its extensive feature set. Despite these shortcomings, however, the handset goes on to impress with snappy and comprehensive connectivity, hassle-free video calling and a glorious high-resolution screen. As for music, the W900i does an admirable job of replacing lower-end MP3 players with its high sound quality and intuitive user interface, but doesn’t offer the most extensive memory with only 512 MB out-of-box. Nokia N70
Score: 75% When: October 2005 Worth: €430 What: 3G phones, Business phones
Despite being an otherwise excellent handset, the Nokia N70 struggles to measure up as a business phone mainly as a result of its inability to properly work with documents - for which its keypad and medium resolution screen are to blame. Poor synchronization capabilities further worsen matters, yet there is no denying that the N70 hosts excellent document viewing software, as well as rock-solid connectivity, good battery life, the ability to easily expand memory and a 2 Megapixel camera which delivers impressive results. Add an adequate brower, and you have yourself a decent 3G phone. More...

Samsung SGH-Z150
Score: 66% When: July 2006 Worth: €325 What: 3G phones, Slim phones
World's slimmest 3G handset or not; Samsung's SGH-Z150 packs plenty of features into its wafer-thin appearances - but could just as well have done without most of them since the handset is mostly good for scheduling and basic messaging. Poor voice quality, no vibrating alert, worse photos, horrid battery life and a straight-jacket memory situation combine to deliver a striking blow to the handset's usability - and a well-earned 'avoid like the plague' recommendation. If you can withstand its 'ooh' factor, that is. More...

Sony Ericsson K610i
Score: 80% When: July 2006 Worth: €300 What: Phones, 3G phones
The K610i is all about balance - the right kinds of features, ease of use and attractive looks. Basics such as voice/video calling and messaging perform with aplomb, while the camera is one of the best we've seen sans autofocus. Sadly, the omission of earphones, insufficient memory and limited music controls make for a poor music proposal out of the box, even though memory card expansion and stereo Bluetooth audio support enables a near-full rectification of this predicament for those willing to pay. Samsung SGH-Z540
Score: 68% When: July 2006 Worth: €425 What: Phones, 3G phones
The Samsung SGH-Z540 comes with a laundry list of features, but with the exception of high marks in the departments of calling and messaging doesn't make much of an impression - if one disregards the stylish, slim design and the superb screen, that is. It also does well as a laptop sidekick, but mind the battery life; this one's more for show than for use, regardless of what it's used for. More...

BenQ-Siemens E81
When: September 2006 What: Phones, 3G phones
In order to keep its size compact, the E81 also keeps features to a minimum. Its more noteworthy ones include 3G connectivity with limited video calling due to the lack of a front mounted camera, while the 1.3 Megapixel edition in the rear snaps stills and video almost exclusively to memory cards; onboard memory is severely restricted. Also present: MP3s either as ringtones or pure entertainment as well as the ability to connect Bluetooth headsets. More...

Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX T830
When: August 2006 Worth: €700 What: Business phones, GPS phones
The Fujitsu Siemens' Pocket LOOX T830 is an impressively compact yet connectivity-laden device which in addition to GPS also boasts 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 1.1 as well as a row of business-oriented features including a decent thumbboard and a 2 Megapixel camera for video calling. Unfortunately, its display is not only of low resolution but also rather small at 2.4 inches, and as such does not lend itself well to GPS navigation in addition to being somewhat cramped for ordinary use.
